When we find we have no control over a situation, or its outcome, the best we can do is avoid making things worse. Since pain, frustration and stress are inevitable, our only effective way to survive these feelings is to learn to tolerate, work with, and live with them. We need to continually turn our minds to accept that this is a part of life and learn healthy ways to cope with pain.
One of the DBT skills, found in the Distress Tolerance module, is the IMROVE mnemonic. This Acronym stands for: • I: Imagery • M: Meaning • P: Prayer • R: Relaxation • O: One Thing in the Moment • V: Vacation • E: Encouragement
It can help us tolerate pain, frustration, and distress without making it worse - while ideally making it better. Using this crisis skill can help us manage difficult emotions during stressful situations when the strength of our emotions is overwhelming.
